Arsenal paint London red with victory parade after Premier League title win

Hundreds of thousands of Arsenal fans from far and wide lined the streets of north London on Sunday chanting and lighting red flares as they celebrated their club's first Premier League title in 22 years. The players celebrated in an open-top bus along with the gleaming ‌Premier League trophy that the club had finally got their hands on after Arsene Wenger's 'Invincibles' last won it in the 2003-04 season. Arsenal had clinched the Premier League title prior to the final game of the season when they had an unassailable lead over second-placed Manchester City, who eventually finished seven points behind Mikel Arteta's side. It was Arsenal's first trophy since Arteta won the FA Cup in his debut season as manager in 2020 as a dream was finally fulfilled for the club after finishing second three years in a row prior to this season. Even Saturday's Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain on penalties in Budapest could not dampen the enthusiasm of the fa...

South Africa's World Cup departure delayed in visa 'debacle'

South Africa will depart for the World Cupon Monday, a day later than ‌planned, after all the players received their visas to travel through the United States, sports minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed on Sunday. The team had been due to leave on a charter flight for their training base in the Mexican city of Pachuca on Sunday but that was postponed while the South African Football Association (SAFA) tried to sort out the paperwork. "All Bafana Bafana players received their visas to travel to the USA. Outstanding is assistant coach, team doctor, head of security and one analyst. The charter will leave tomorrow (Monday)," McKenzie said on X. He had earlier issued a furious rebuke to SAFA over the paperwork issues, calling them "embarrassing and grossly unfair towards the players and coaching staff", adding "we are being made to look like fools". The football association confirmed in a statement that the team had been unable to fly in the morning as plann...

Manchester City thrash Brighton to win women's FA Cup

Manchester City hammered Brighton & Hove Albion to win the Women's FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, securing the ‌trophy for the first time since 2020 and completing a domestic double in the process. After bulldozing their way to the Women's Super League title on the back of Bunny Shaw's 21 goals, the Jamaican international was instrumental again and, after rumours that she might depart, she celebrated signing a new contract with City by opening the scoring in the 38th minute. Brighton, who beat City in the league run-in but could not prevent them from being ‌crowned champions, started well in their first trip to the final but the wheels came off when Alex Greenwood added a second goal deep into first-half stoppage time to send City in 2-0 up at the break. Aoba Fujino netted the third in the 66th minute, ghosting past two Brighton defenders and firing home with her left foot, and Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema headed the fourth three minutes before full time to...

Dembele vows PSG will chase Champions League hat-trick after Paris celebrations

Paris St Germain forward Ousmane Dembele promised fans gathered at the foot of the Eiffel Tower ‌on Sunday that the club would chase a third consecutive Champions League title next season, as supporters celebrated the city's back-to-back European triumphs. "Thanks to all of you for your support. We'll be back next year with the third one," Dembele addressed the crowd as they danced to Daft Punk’s "One More Time", while the players showed off the trophy secured against Arsenal on Saturday. The mood was relaxed after light showers gave way to sunshine, in contrast to scenes overnight when post-game violence across the capital left over 200 people injured ‌and killed one. Qatari club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi urged fans to keep up the positive atmosphere. "Celebrate calmly tonight. Protect our city, that's very important," he said. PSG players took to the Champs de Mars, a giant open field beneath the Eiffel Tower, before an official visit...

Visa setback delays South Africa's departure for World Cup training camp

South Africa's preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup have suffered an unexpected setback after visa complications forced the team to postpone its departure for a pre-tournament training camp in Mexico. The squad, popularly known as Bafana Bafana, was scheduled to leave Johannesburg on Sunday aboard a chartered flight to Mexico City.  However, the South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed that visa-related issues affecting several players and officials disrupted the travel plans. In a statement released on Sunday, SAFA revealed that the delegation had encountered challenges in securing the necessary travel documents, although the exact number of affected personnel was not disclosed. "SAFA is working around the clock to ensure that the team travels to Mexico City as soon as possible," the federation said, adding that an emergency meeting had been convened to address the situation. According to reports from state broadcaster SABC, visas for at least 20 mem...

Suarez, Nandez miss out as Bielsa names Uruguay's World Cup squad

Uruguay's Luis Suarez and Nahitan Nandez were the big names who missed out on selection for the World Cup as coach Marcelo Bielsa named his final 26-man squad on Sunday. Suarez, 39, had left ‌the door open for an international return, saying he would reverse his retirement if needed in the national side after a 20-month absence. But there was no place for him. Suarez had criticised Bielsa's management style, saying it had divided the dressing room, although he later said he had apologised for those remarks. Nandez, 30, played for Uruguay in several World Cup qualifiers but Bielsa has phased out veterans in favour of a squad with players in their prime. The team is built around the defensive spine led by Ronald Araujo, Jose Maria Gimenez and Mathias Olivera. The presence of Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Manuel Ugarte and Nicolas de la Cruz offers Bielsa the energy and pressing intensity he craves in midfield while the forward line is led ‌by Darwin Nunez. However, Nu...

Bentaleb back for Algeria as World Cup squad named

Algeria handed a recall to midfielder Nabil Bentaleb and included him in their squad for the World Cup as coach Vladimir Petkovic on Sunday unveiled his selection for the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Bentaleb, 31, has not played for ‌the team since last October but has been recalled to a squad that also sees the return of key attackers Houssem Aouar and Amine Gouiri, who missed the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco at the turn of the year because of injury. Bentaleb played at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where Algeria got past the first round, but has had several periods of lengthy absence from the side. “We know Bentaleb well; he has all the qualities as a person for the group too,” Petkovic said. "He has shown he's in form these last few months." Oussama Benbot, who announced his retirement from the national team after being an unused substitute at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco at the turn of the year, returned to help solve a po...

Kostyuk compounds French Open chaos by crushing Swiatek in last 16

Iga Swiatek's 25th birthday celebrations turned sour at the French Open on Sunday as the former champion lost 7-5 6-1 to 15th seed Marta Kostyuk and ‌her hunt for a fifth title ended just when she had looked to be rediscovering her form. Swiatek's shock loss comes amid a chaotic spell at Roland Garros, during which men's world number one Jannik Sinner, 24-times Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic and defending women's champion Coco Gauff all went out in the last three days. It leaves world number one Aryna Sabalenka as favourite to capture her first title in Paris, though Ukrainian Kostyuk will be one to watch as she builds on the momentum that has helped her sparkle on clay this season. "I'm still in shock," Kostyuk said in an on-court interview. "I feel like I've given myself more space to just create something, to challenge my opponents. I woke up in the morning and all I thought was 'what an unbelievable day I have to live today ... there...

Japan defeat Iceland in World Cup send-off through late Ogawa header

Japan eked out a late 1-0 win over Iceland in Tokyo on Sunday through Koki Ogawa's 87th-minute header as Hajime Moriyasu's side closed out their home-based preparations for the World Cup with a barely deserved victory. Ogawa was one of ‌11 substitutions made by Moriyasu in a match that had the mood of a testimonial with Maya Yoshida granted a final appearance for the Samurai Blue almost four years after his previous game for Japan. The 37-year-old left the pitch to a guard of honour in the 13th minute and passed the captain's armband to Wataru Endo, the Liverpool man returning to the line-up after several months on the sidelines in an injury-affected season. Yoshida had started in a backline that featured Takehiro Tomiyasu for the first time in almost two years, the former Arsenal defender continuing to build his fitness towards Japan's World Cup opener against the Netherlands on June 14. The Japanese threatened in the early exchanges, with Keito Nakamura sliding his...

South Korea's Son scores brace in win over Trinidad and Tobago

Son Heung-min answered questions about his form in convincing fashion on Saturday, netting twice as South Korea thrashed Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 in a World Cup warm-up friendly. The 33-year-old has been under some scrutiny ‌ahead of the World Cup, with the forward yet to score for Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer this season. Son opened the scoring for South Korea with a close-range finish in the 40th minute, before doubling their lead from the penalty spot three minutes later. Hwang Hee-chan netted once and substitute Cho Gue-sung scored two more in the second half to complete South Korea's rout of their much lower-ranked opponents in Provo, Utah. "I think our confidence may have been low after losing twice in March (to Ivory Coast and Austria), and we will try to build on this and keep the momentum going," Son told reporters after the win. "Regardless of opponents, it's not easy to win 5-0. So I hope people don't take this for granted. The players des...

Spurs end Thunder's title defense, reach first NBA Finals since 2014

Luke Kornet returned to the bench a hero. The San Antonio Spurs backup big man had just turned in perhaps the biggest defensive play of Game 7 of the Western Conference finals, coming in for a stretch in relief of Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama exited the game with five fouls and the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder had what seemed like a prime chance to seize control. But instead, Kornet blocked Isaiah Hartenstein just seconds after entering, the Spurs came through on the other end, and the Spurs were on their ‌way to an NBA Finals berth with a 111-103 road win over the Thunder on Saturday. "The definition of a winning play," Wembanyama said. San Antonio will open the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks at home Wednesday. The teams have met in the Finals once before, with San Antonio winning the 1999 NBA Championship in five games. It was the first of five titles for the Spurs. Their last visit was in 2014, when they beat the Miami Heat in five games. In...

Arteta demands fast, smart and bold moves to continue Arsenal's progress

Arsenal's hierarchy need to make quick, smart and bold decisions if they are to keep progressing, manager Mikel Arteta said on Saturday, after his side lost on penalties to Paris St Germain in the Champions League final. The defeat is the second time Arsenal ‌have lost in the final of Europe's premier competition, although this time they will console themselves knowing they have just won their first English domestic title in 22 years. The London club took the lead in Budapest when Kai Havertz lashed in after just six minutes, but they were eventually pegged back by an Ousmane Dembele penalty and then suffered penalty shootout heartbreak after extra time. A crestfallen Arteta said his club now needed to make some "very important decisions" if they wanted to become a dominant force both domestically and in Europe. "First of all, I would take a few days with my family and then we will start the process to review what we've done," Arteta told reporters. ...

Brazil boss Ancelotti confident forward Neymar will recover for World Cup

Brazil's Neymar is recovering well from a calf injury and could even be available for their opening World Cup match next month, coach Carlo Ancelotti said. Neymar was recalled ‌to the squad this month despite not featuring in Ancelotti's plans during the Italian's year in charge of Brazil. The Santos forward, who is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 128 international appearances, was then ruled out of warm-up games against Panama and Egypt by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) due to the calf injury on Thursday. "Before the squad announcement, we received a report from Santos saying the player had a minor issue, some swelling. We left Santos to deal with that situation until the 27th," Ancelotti told reporters on Saturday ahead of Brazil's meeting with Panama. "Neymar was called up because, from the coaching staff's point of ‌view, he had to be called up. After the 27th, the CBF took over Neymar's situation, and tha...

Faith in Luis Enrique leads PSG to back-to-back Champions League titles

Paris St Germain’s back-to-back Champions League triumphs have been built on talent, depth and tactical sophistication, but those inside the club point first to something less tangible when explaining their rise to the summit of Europe - belief. Luis Enrique arrived ‌in Paris in 2023 promising a cultural shift rather than instant glamour, with the Spaniard wanting a team in which collective sacrifice outweighed individual status, where the biggest names defended, pressed and suffered together. Two Champions League titles later, his players speak about him less as a coach than as an architect and people leader. “It’s not easy to do it back-to-back, but we did,” defender Achraf Hakimi said after PSG beat Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in Saturday’s final following a 1-1 draw after extra time. “The coach is the big voice of the club. We follow him, we trust him. Since day one he told us the team is more important than the player. We have created not just a team but a family.” That idea h...

U.S. defender Richards in race to be fit for World Cup after ankle injury

Chris Richards' hopes of playing for the United States in the World Cup on home soil hang in the balance because of an ankle injury, with coach Mauricio Pochettino leaving the defender ‌out of the squad for a warm-up friendly against Senegal on Sunday. Richards tore two ligaments in his ankle while playing for Crystal Palace in a 2-2 Premier League draw with Brentford this month and did not feature in the club's Conference League final victory this week. "We decided with Chris, with the medical and the performance staff, (for him) to not be part of the group that is going to be in North Carolina playing tomorrow against Senegal," Pochettino told reporters on Saturday. "I think he needs to keep doing his rehab, and I think it's much better to stay here and plan to train and reevaluate next week how he is. "I was asking from yesterday, (when Richards) arrived, to (assistant coach) Jesus 100 times: 'What do you think, what ‌information do we have?...

Liverpool sack Slot after dramatic fall from champions to fifth place

By Maxwell Kumoye  Liverpool have parted ways with manager Arne Slot after a disappointing second season that saw the Reds slip from Premier League champions to a fifth-place finish, ending the Dutchman's two-year spell at Anfield. The decision was announced on Saturday, with the club admitting that "change is necessary" despite Slot's historic achievement of guiding Liverpool to the league title in his debut campaign. Slot arrived at Anfield in 2024 from Dutch side Feyenoord as the successor to the legendary Jurgen Klopp.  Expectations were high, but the Dutchman exceeded them in his first season, steering Liverpool to the Premier League crown behind the brilliance of Mohamed Salah, who contributed 29 goals and 18 assists. However, the title-winning momentum quickly evaporated. Liverpool's attempt to defend their crown turned into a battle to secure Champions League qualification as the Reds endured a turbulent campaign marked by inconsistent performances, dressi...

Spain favorites to win 2026 World Cup, Goldman model shows

Spain are the favorites to win the 2026 World Cup, ahead of France, Argentina and Brazil, according to a Goldman Sachs model published on Friday that uses teams' historical ‌performance and ranking data. The model gives Spain a 26% chance of lifting the trophy at the tournament, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19. ★ France were next on 19%, followed by reigning champions Argentina on 14%, Brazil on 8% and England on 5%, Goldman Sachs said in a research note. ★ The bank said its forecast is based mainly on teams' Elo ratings, a performance-ranking system originally devised for chess and adapted for football, along with additional factors including attacking talent, recent momentum, mentality and geography. "Spain is predicted to win because it has the highest Elo ranking, supported by scoring talent and good momentum into the competition," Goldman Sachs said. ★ Argentina's ‌chances were reduced by what the bank ca...

South Africa rue Foster penalty miss in friendly draw with Nicaragua

Lyle Foster missed a penalty as World Cup-bound South Africa were held to a disappointing ‌0-0 draw by lowly Nicaragua in their friendly international in Johannesburg on Friday. Foster struck the post from the spot late in the first half as coach Hugo Broos rested several of his regulars in a final match before they head to their team base in Pachuca, Mexico. South Africa dominated possession but created very little against a visiting side ‌who barely managed to get out of their own half and offered nothing in attack. South Africa take on co-hosts Mexico in the World Cup opener in Mexico City on June 11, before a clash with the Czech Republic in Atlanta on June 18 and a final Group A fixture against South Korea six days later in Monterrey.

Iran beat Gambia as federation seeks FIFA clarity over visas

Iran have asked FIFA to clarify when tournament visas will be issued following the relocation of their World Cup training camp from Arizona to Tijuana, a senior official from the Islamic Republic's national football federation (FFIRI) said on ‌Friday. The national team came from behind to beat Gambia 3-1 in a World Cup warm-up match in the Turkish city of Antalya, days after their tournament preparations were disrupted by a base camp relocation to Mexico following approval from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and FIFA. Iran are scheduled to play all three of their group matches in the United States but the team's participation in the June 11 to July 19 tournament has been in question since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran in late February. The relocation followed diplomatic friction and visa complications, with Iran now requiring cross-border clearance for their Group G matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in Los Angeles and Seattle. Mehdi Mohammadnabi, first...

Monza secure Serie A return despite playoff second leg loss

AC Monza have been promoted to Italy's top-flight after just one season in Serie B, ‌despite losing 2-0 in the second leg of their playoff clash against Catanzaro on Friday. After the playoff ended level with an aggregate score of 2-2, Monza were promoted due to their third-placed finish in the Serie B league stage, which was higher than Catanzaro's fifth. Monza secured promotion exactly four years to the day since their first-ever promotion to Serie ‌A in 2022, which came when they were owned by Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi, the former Italian Prime Minister and media tycoon who previously owned AC Milan, took over Monza in 2018 when they were playing in Italy's third tier. After their relegation to Serie B in 2025, Monza were sold to U.S.-based investment firm Beckett Layne Ventures.

Salah heads Egypt World Cup squad, teen talent Abdel Karim earns call-Up

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s talismanic winger, will head Egypt’s final squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America next ‌month, coach Hossam Hassan said on Saturday. The squad lineup featured few surprises, except for the inclusion of rising striker Hamza Abdel Karim. The 18-year-old is on loan from Egyptian giants Al Ahly to Barcelona Atletic, the reserve side of the La Liga champions. Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush, who scored eight goals in 36 appearances for his club this season, is expected to lead Egypt’s attack in the tournament. Egypt will begin their World Cup campaign against Belgium on June 15 in Seattle as part of Group G, which also ‌includes New Zealand and Iran. The team will play their final friendly match against Brazil on June 6 in Ohio. Defenders: Mohamed Abdelmonem (Nice), Mohamed Hany, Yasser Ibrahim (Al Ahly), Hossam Abdelm...

Teen sensation Fonseca comes of age by taming Djokovic at French Open

Novak Djokovic's latest bid to capture a record 25th Grand Slam title was left in tatters after a stunning third-round defeat by Brazilian teen sensation Joao Fonseca in an entertaining epic at the French Open on Friday. Djokovic's 4-6 4-6 6-3 7-5 7-5 defeat meant the 39-year-old ‌Serb's wait to surpass Margaret Court will go on in the twilight of a glorious career, as the draw in Paris opened up further a day after world number one Jannik Sinner's shock exit. Victory in an epic clash lasting four hours and 53 minutes ensured that Fonseca became the first teenager to beat Djokovic at the Grand Slams, as he announced himself as another genuine contender to claim a maiden major crown. "I actually didn't believe I could win the match, I just played and enjoyed being on the court. What an idol we have and what a pleasure it was to step onto the court against him, so I thank him. I'm very happy," Fonseca said. "I was just trying to hit the ball as fa...

Yankees overpower Athletics for fifth consecutive win

Paul Goldschmidt hit a three-run homer and Ryan McMahon and Ben Rice added solo blasts as the New York Yankees rolled to an easy 8-2 victory over the Athletics on Friday in West Sacramento, Calif. AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, praised the athletes for their remarkable progress and d...

Victor Wembanyama, Spurs dominate Thunder to force Game 7

After a disappointing Game 5 loss in the Western Conference finals, San Antonio Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said his team needed more from superstar Victor Wembanyama. Two days later, Wembanyama appeared in his first playoff elimination game, and he came through in a big way. Wembanyama set the tone from the beginning, helping the Spurs build a lead they never relinquished while beating the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder 118-91 on Thursday to even the best-of-seven series at three wins apiece. Wembanyama finished with 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting, and he added 10 rebounds and three blocks. However, it was in a period when Wembanyama was on the bench that the Spurs put the game away. The Thunder were still within striking distance, trailing by 10, when Wembanyama came out with 7:39 remaining in the third quarter. For much of the series, Oklahoma City had controlled the game when Wembanyama was on the bench. This time, though, the Spurs were dominant, scoring 11 consecutive points...

Coach Lionel Scaloni retained the core of the side that won Argentina's third world title, although veteran winger Angel Di Maria was not considered after retiring from international football following the 2024 Copa America. Midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, who missed the 2022 World Cup through injury, returned for his second finals after being part of Argentina's squad in Russia in 2018 without making an appearance. Argentina also included several younger players expected to lead the te...

Rock-solid Arsenal ready for PSG test in Champions League final

With the pressure of trying to deliver the Premier League title now released, Arsenal are seeking a glittering double and proof they are firmly ‌part of Europe's elite. They face a formidable challenge in Budapest against Luis Enrique's outstanding PSG team, with their rare blend of eye-catching flair, intelligence and hard graft. But Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has built a spine to his side that might just be the perfect foil. At its base, goalkeeper David Raya has kept nine clean sheets in Arsenal's 14-game unbeaten run to the final. Arteta acknowledges he ruffled some feathers when he brought the Spaniard in three years ago but views it as one of the decisions that helped Arsenal clinch their first domestic title in 22 years and reach their first Champions League final in 20. In central de...
