Edo sports blossom under Governor Okpebholo – Sabina Chikere

...Hails “a monumental year” of progress
By Oluwatobiloba Zeal-Adepetu Kumoye

The heartbeat of Nigerian sports is pounding stronger in Edo State and at the center of the excitement stands a beaming Mrs. Sabina Chikere, Executive Director of Sports Development and Operations at the Edo State Sports Commission.

With a wide grin and a voice brimming with gratitude, Chikere could hardly contain her joy as Governor Monday Okpebholo marked one year in office, a year she described as “monumental” for sports in the state.

“Edo has become a paradise of tranquility and progress, a safe haven for sports development,” Chikere said proudly, saluting the Governor’s steadfast dedication and the unwavering support of his deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa.

In an exclusive chat with FIRST ZEALMEDIACAST BLOG's Oluwatobiloba Zeal-Adepetu Kumoye, Chikere recounted a string of achievements that have turned the South-South powerhouse into a beacon of sport excellence.

Under Okpebholo’s dynamic leadership, Team Edo stormed the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State, finishing among the top five, a feat that reaffirmed the state’s elite sporting status.

Edo’s dominance also stretched beyond national borders. Rising star Joy Nwabuzor made headlines as part of Team Nigeria’s victorious squad at the Africa Youth Scrabble Championship, later dazzling again on the world stage at the World Youth Scrabble Championship.

At the National Youth Games in Asaba, the state’s youth team fought valiantly to secure a bronze-place finish, another victory Chikere credits to the governor’s vision and investment in youth talent.

And if that wasn’t enough, the Heartbeat State celebrated yet another proud moment when Bright Idahosa, an Edo-born Scrabble maestro, was elected President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF).

Two honourable sons of Edo State, Uyi Akpata, President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, and Prince Kelvin Erhunmwunse, head of Nigeria Gymnastics, shared one mission, to make Nigeria believe in new sports dreams.

Uyi built cricket from dusty fields to stadium lights. Kelvin turned gym floors into launchpads for young stars.

Together, they inspired a generation that swung bats and soared through the air, proof that with passion and vision, Nigeria could conquer any sport and Edo State is the springboard.

For Mrs. Chikere, these milestones are only the beginning.

“Governor Okpebholo has reignited the spirit of sports in Edo. His love and commitment have changed the narrative and the results speak for themselves,” she declared.

As the applause grows louder across Nigeria’s sporting circles, one thing is clear, under Governor Okpebholo’s watch, Edo isn’t just the Heartbeat of the Nation. It’s the pulse driving Nigerian sports forward.

Nigeria backs ANOCA rotation policy as Uganda lands 2031 African Games hosting rights

By Maxwell Kumoye  Uganda's emergence as host of the 2031 African Games has been linked to the rotational hosting policy of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), a framework designed to ensure equitable distribution of the continent's biggest multi-sport event among Africa's regions. Investigations have revealed that the East African nation benefited significantly from the policy, which seeks to spread hosting opportunities across the continent rather than concentrating them in a few countries. The decision is also understood to have been aided by Nigeria's withdrawal from the race, leaving Uganda as the sole candidate for the prestigious event. For Nigeria, supporting the rotational arrangement aligns with the country's longstanding contribution to the growth of the African Games movement. The nation has already hosted the continental showpiece twice, first in Lagos in 1973 and again in Abuja in 2003, making it one of only a handful of c...

Protests and last-minute construction work disrupt Mexico City ahead of World Cup

Eight days before Mexico City kicks off the World Cup, mass protests by teachers and retired judges, road closures and last-minute construction work caused chaos in the capital on Wednesday for millions of residents who face long delays and complex rerouting of their daily commutes. On June 11, Mexico City will host the inaugural World Cup match between ‌Mexico and South Africa at Azteca stadium in the capital. With Mexico in the global spotlight, teachers and other groups have staged marches and blocked major avenues. Iran to play World Cup warm-up behind closed doors, head to Mexico on Saturday

Iran will play their final World Cup warm-up behind closed doors in Turkey on Thursday before departing for their tournament base in Mexico on Saturday, the Iranian FA (FFIRI) said on Wednesday. Although it was one of the first teams to ‌qualify, Iran's participation in the World Cup has been in doubt since the U.S. and Israel launched air strikes on the Islamic Republic in late February. The squad have played three friendlies in two training camps in Antalya since the start of the war - losing to Nigeria and beating Costa Rica and Gambia - and on Thursday will face Mali in the Turkish sea resort. "Considering the importance of the Iranian national football team's friendly match against Mali, and in line with the tactical objectives of Iran's head coach, tomorrow's match against Mali will be held behind closed doors and without media attendance," FFIRI said in a statement. The FFIRI persuaded FIFA to allow the team to swap its tournament base from Tucson, A...
