Lamine Yamal marked his 19th birthday on Monday with diamonds around his neck, a playful family storyline in the background and the biggest match of his young career waiting ahead. But as Spain prepared for their World Cup semi-final showdown with France, the teenage forward made it clear that his message was not about glamour, gifts or fame.

Asked about former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s controversial comment that France were a great team but “did not have any French players,” Yamal gave a calm, thoughtful response. With a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, he said football should unite rather than divide.

“Tomorrow we’ll play a brilliant match but if football serves any purpose it’s to bring people together,” Yamal told reporters in Dallas. “France and Spain are examples of integration. That’s what football is all about: integration. Not talking about what someone else has said.”

For a player still young enough to be questioned about birthday presents, it was a remarkably mature answer. And it came at a time when his family has also found itself in the tournament spotlight, especially his three-year-old brother Keyne, whose lively behaviour in front of the cameras has added a touch of fun to Spain’s World Cup run.

“My brother doesn’t realise,” Yamal said with a smile. “He does what he does at home, and when the camera focuses on him, he gets up to mischief. I like it when people like him. It’s fun to see him on screen.”

Yamal also arrived at the news conference wearing an eye-catching diamond necklace, a birthday gift to himself on the eve of what he called “the most important match of my life.” Yet despite having scored just once at the tournament, he insisted he was not worried about his numbers.

“Every tournament is different,” he said. “I’m not worried about having scored just one goal in the World Cup so far. We’re winning. I’ve seen World Cups where Spain were knocked out, and so far that hasn’t happened. I hope to keep playing matches so I can score.”

Spain now face France in Dallas for a place in the World Cup final, and Yamal’s birthday week has only added more drama to an already massive occasion. Still, his message remained the same: let football speak, let the game breathe, and let the moment belong to the pitch.
