Queiroz steps down as Ghana coach after World Cup exit

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has stepped down after just three months in charge following the Black Stars' FIFA World Cup campaign, which ended in the Round of 32.

The 73-year-old, who was managing at his fifth consecutive World Cup, was appointed in April to replace Otto Addo, who left the role 72 days before the tournament.

Announcing his departure on Instagram on Sunday, Queiroz reflected positively on his brief spell with the four-time African champions.

"I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination, it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions," he wrote.

Under Queiroz, Ghana defeated Panama, held England to a draw and lost to Croatia to finish third in Group L, advancing to the knockout stage as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

The Black Stars' World Cup journey came to an end with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

Queiroz, who previously coached Iran, Portugal and Egypt, oversaw just one friendly match before leading Ghana at the World Cup, bringing his short tenure to a close after the tournament.
